PMI111A - Number of Wastewater treatment plant stages by type of plants |
Definition |
Wastewater treatment plant is an installation or a group of installations achieved or adapted for reducing the quantity of pollutants in wastewater. Urban wastewater treatment plant removes the pollutants from the urban wastewater compound of a mixture of urban and industrial wastewater. Urban wastewater treatment plants are usually operated by public authorities or by private companies working by order of public authorities. Industrial wastewater treatment plant removes the pollutants from the industrial wastewater. Industrial wastewater treatment plants are operated by the economical units. Independent wastewater treatment plant is a mini station for treatment of the wastewater resulted from residential zones or small social or commercial units (hospitals, schools, military units, hotels, shops). Primary treatment step is a component of the waste water treatment plant in which take place mainly a suspended solids removal process. The condition to define the primary step takes also into consideration the treatment efficiencies of the pollutants removal: BOD5>20% and suspended matters >50%. Secondary treatment step is a component of the waste water treatment plant in which biodegradable organic matter is mainly removed. The condition to define the secondary step takes also into consideration the treatment efficiencies of the pollutants removal: BOD5>70% and CCO >75% The tertiary (advanced) treatment is a component of the waste water treatment plant in which is mainly achieved the removal of nutrients (substances containing nitrogen and phosphorus). The condition for defining the tertiary step takes also into consideration the treatment efficiencies of the pollutants removal: BOD5>95%, CCO >50%, Ntotal>70% and Ptotal>80%. Biochemical oxygen demand at 5 days BOD the quantity of oxygen consumed for aerobic oxidation by micro-organisms of organic matters at a standard temperature of 20oC and a standard time of 5 days. Treatment plant capacity represents the capacity of treatment plant to treat a certain flow of wastewater or a certain quantity of BOD5. Effluent represents the wastewater discharged by treatment plant into the receiver, or by a treatment stage. Sludge represents the quantity of solid substances separated from wastewater by different procedures accompanied by a great quantity of water (humidity). Sludge processing is achieved through various procedures for reducing the quantity of contained water in order to recover the useful substances or to improve it for its usage as a fertiliser in agriculture or for other purposes. Compost represents the fermentation of sludge from wastewater in order to be used in various purposes. Incinerated sludge represents the sludge incinerated for organic substances oxidising and obtaining ashes of much smaller in volume.

Data sources |
Collection, treatment and discharge of wastewater details |
Methodology |
The data are collected through exhaustive statistical survey and take into consideration all the units which are discharging wastewater (treated or not) into natural receivers. |
Last update |
DEC 12, 2016 |
Observations |
No data available for the period 1990 - 2005, because the statistical survey was carried out since 2006. Last period of this series: Year 2015; starting with 2016 no data is collecting. |
