Definition The mean age of the legally resident population is the mean of the ages of a population, by age meaning that continuous demographic variable that expresses the time elapsed from the date of birth of a person to a particular moment of observation.

Methodology The mean age of the legally resident population is determined by the formula:

x=[SUM(x+0,5)Px]/SUM(Px)

where:
x = age in reached years;
Px = population of x years old;
0.5 = constant (half year, considered as the average equivalent of variation of deviations from the exact date to reach a certain age).
Age is expressed in the completed years (for instance, a person of 24 years old and 11 months at July 1st, is considered to be of 24 years old).

Observations Legally resident population on July 1 represents the number of persons with Romanian citizenship and domicile on the territory of Romania, determined according to administrative-territorial criteria.
Person domicile is the address where he/she declares to have the main dwelling, registered in the identity card, as the state administrative bodies register it. To set up the value of this indicator, the usual residence is not taken into account as well as the period and/or reason of absence from the domicile.
Data regarding the mean age of the legally resident population are available at territorial level, starting with 1992, at the following levels of detail: national level, macroregions, development regions and counties.
The statistical data are revised constantly, according to the Revision Policy of INS.
The distribution of the data in territorial profile is in accordance with the administrative-territorial organization existing at the reference date.
