Definition The capacity of IWW vessels is given by the quantity of goods or the number of passengers that can be transported under safe navigation conditions. The capacity of freight vessels is expressed in tonnes, the power of tugs and pushing craft in kW, while the capacity of passenger vessels is expressed in number of passengers.

Starting with 2019 reference year, the category ''Inland waterways vessels for passenger transport'' include day-trip vessels, vessels with cabins (for cruises), ferry-boats with and without self-propulsion, other inland waterways passenger vessels.
